The easy part: Rice
Get white or brown rice grains (husband and I use 3/4 cup)
Wash thoroughly until the rice is clean
Keep it soaked in water for a half hour
Steps to make rice:
Turn on your stove, put rice grains with lots of water on heat
Twist: Put two to three drops of olive oil. (I've learned that doing this step ensures that the rice does not stick to the bottom of the pan and it turns out pretty awesomely!) When done (I pester my husband to check the grains and when he's sure it's cooked, I turn the gas off) then drain out the rest of the water if any and you're done, Voila!
Indian dal/red lentils:
Take a cup of toor dal/moong dal from any Indian grocery store.
Clean it thoroughly and soak it in water for a half hour. Get your pressure cooker, put the dal, double quantity of water (two cups), olive oil (very important for the same reason, does not make it stick) and turmeric powder (from indian grocery stores) Once your pressure cooker has whistled three times, turn it o Separately in a pan,
Step 1: Olive oil
Step 2: Mustard and jeera/cumin for taste
Step 3: Once it crackles, put curry leaves and three chillies and grated ginger (the more the better)
Step 4: Put in the following powders: Chilly powder (1 tspn) turmeric powder (1 tspn) coriander powder (1 tspn) and salt to taste
Step 5: Once that has been fried (the aroma will assure you it has) add diced tomatoes (one big tomato) Step 6: Stir well until the tomato has mashed well with the rest of the concoction Step 7: Add the cooked dal from the pressure cooker.
Step 7: Add chopped fresh coriander leaves. Serve rice with dal and kiss your Filippo Berio olive oil bottle and tell all your friends. Burp.
Note: My dear Filippo Berio olive oil bottle, which I do kiss after every meal was given to me as part of a BzzAgent campaign kit and the coupons that I will distribute to anyone who asks is also part of that kit. This is my true and honest opinion.
